SEPTember 2016 Update
September 2, 2016
Hello Friends of Never Give Up!
We are busy preparing for several upcoming screenings of our rough-cut, and completing Part One for the Big Day: October 19, 2016, Min Yasui’s 100th birthday. You are all invited to celebrate with us in Hood River, Oregon starting in the evening of October 18 with readings from the play Citizen Min, and finishing the evening of October 19 with the screening of Part One of our film, Never Give Up! Minoru Yasui and the Fight for Justice
On August 29, we recorded the final narration for Part One of Never Give Up! with George Takei – and we are so grateful to George, not only for loaning his beautiful, melodious voice to our film as narrator, but also for his insightful perspective on Japanese American history. Because of George’s suggestions, our film will be more historically accurate and complete.
On September 9, 2016 co-director Will Doolittle and I will be screening our rough-cut in Eugene, Oregon and I will be accepting the UO School of Law John E. Jaqua Distinguished Alumnus Award on behalf of Min Yasui. The screening takes place at 12 noon at the Knight Law Center #110 on campus, and admission is free to the public.
On October 16, 2016, I will be screening the same cut of the film at Boise State University at the Minidoka symposium entitled “Mass Incarceration in the Land of the Free.” This symposium requires advance registration, please contact me if you are interested in enrolling.
And of course on October 19, 2016 we will screen the complete cut, which will run about 50 minutes, at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon. This screening starts at 7 p.m. and will be follow by a Q&A with Will and me, and a talk by Peggy Nagae. This event is also open and free to the public.
On October 21, 2016, the film will be screened in Phoenix, Arizona (Arizona State University), sponsored by the Arizona JACL. This screening is open and free to the public. For more information, please contact me.
Please let us know if you are interested in attending any of these screenings.
Thank you for your support for our project and we hope you might be able to join us in Hood River on Min Yasui’s 100th birthday, October 19, 2016 or in Eugene or Phoenix for public screenings.
Best regards, Holly Yasui, co-director of Never Give Up! Minoru Yasui and the Fight for Justice.
